Mackinnon grew up mostly in Southern California, where he developed a deep attachment to the Surf and Beach culture of the 70s through the 2000s. This connection to the openness of the space, the sound of the ocean, and the freedom of swimming in it continues to influence his work. He later moved to New York City to advance his photographic career.
His studio is located in the Hudson Valley, New York, about 70 miles north of NYC, in Wappingers Falls. The 1,000 sq ft facility is equipped with the latest archival printing, mounting, and framing capabilities. Since 2009, he has traveled the country exhibiting in art shows after a career in advertising and commercial photography.
